Enter at the Right Moment, Ready to Own the Conversation
AI is not replacing your GTM team. It is changing when your people enter the conversation, and what they already know when they do.
By Uthra Krishnan

The question everyone is asking about AI and GTM teams is the wrong question.
Whether AI replaces SDRs, account executives, or sales engineers misses what is actually happening. The answer is not replacement. It is not elimination. It is something more interesting and more immediately useful to anyone running a revenue function right now.
AI changes when your team enters the conversation. And it changes what they know when they do.
The Problem Is Not the People
The data on GTM productivity is striking, and not in the way most people frame it.
Sales reps spend only 28 to 30 percent of their working week on actual selling activities. The remaining 70 percent goes to CRM data entry, internal meetings, prospect research, and administrative work. In 2025, 78 percent of sellers missed quota, up from 69 percent the year before. That is not a talent problem. It is a timing and context problem. Reps are entering conversations too early, with too little information, and spending their best hours on work that was never going to move a deal.
Sales engineers face the same issue from a different angle. Thirty-five percent of product demos are unqualified or underqualified. Each consumes between two and ten hours of a skilled person's time. The cost is not just the hours. It is the strategic work that did not happen because the SE was in a room with someone who was never going to buy.
And underneath both numbers is a shift most GTM teams have not fully reckoned with. Seventy-five percent of B2B buyers now prefer a completely rep-free experience for the research and evaluation phase. They want to understand the product, form a view, and determine fit before they talk to anyone. Most companies offer them a contact form and a follow-up email that arrives two days later.
The conversations your team is having are not always the conversations buyers want to be having.
What Changes
The technology does not replace judgment, relationships, or expertise. It handles the work that does not require any of those things, so the people who have them can deploy them at the moment they actually matter.
Inbound qualification does not require a human. A visitor who wants to understand whether a product solves their problem does not need a scheduled discovery call. They need accurate answers, a way to signal intent, and a path to something deeper. An AI agent that qualifies through real conversation, draws from a governed knowledge base, and routes to a human when the moment is genuinely ready does this better than a two-day response time and a calendar link.
First-pass product education does not require a human. The questions that appear at the beginning of every sales cycle are largely the same questions. What does this product do, how does it handle this use case, what does implementation look like. These belong in an on-demand layer, not on an SE's calendar.
What AI produces along the way is as important as what it handles. Every conversation generates structured intelligence. Topics discussed. Questions asked. Signals surfaced. All of it writes to the CRM before a human enters the picture.
Ready to Own It
Sellers who work alongside AI effectively are 3.7 times more likely to meet quota than those who do not, according to Gartner. The same research points to a quieter finding: organizations that invest in teaching their sellers to use AI well, rather than simply buying the tools, are 2.4 times more likely to post strong revenue growth than those that do not.
What separates those teams is not the technology. It is that their people enter each conversation at the moment it is worth their attention, with the context already in hand, doing the work that only they can do.
That is not replacement. That is what your GTM team was built for.
